Beck met Mattie Cooper shortly after he escaped from Chicago House of Correction. They married in 1947 and then moved back to Beck’s mother’s house in Milwaukee. They traveled across a half dozen midwest states robbing marks. Mattie had a long rap sheet before she met Beck for everything from assault to prostitution, and she was arrested multiple times while they were married. Beck left her to try pimping in cities like Cleveland and Detroit in 1951. She was spent time in and out of prison over the next few years, and she was put away for murder in 1956.
